What Resources Does Your Community Have?

Are you enthusiastic about your community? Can you describe things people could do if they came to your community? What is the unique characteristic of your community? Most people take for granted the unique character of where they live. Wouldn’t it be nice if that uniqueness was highlighted? This could help bring the community together and encourage visitors. The residents gain pride and enthusiasm for their town’s story. Every place has that special something. You just need to recognize it.

Recently I traveled to Spain. I was there 24 hours earlier than my tour pick up in Barcelona. All the hotels were booked in Barcelona, so I spent the first night in Granollers. It’s about 20 minutes north of Barcelona by train. I had an evening and a good part of a day to spend in Granollers.

Granollers, Spain

When I asked several locals what there was to see in Granollers they said there is nothing here you need to go to Barcelona for that. I was shocked. This city had 60,000 people. I could see just from my walk from the train station to the hotel that they had a lot to do. With some digging I found out there were museums, and old Gothic Church, a great shopping district, farmer’s market almost daily, emblematic buildings, good restaurants, etc. Geez, they didn’t know they had a lot to offer.

Much of my trip to Spain was riding horses through small villages and the countryside. It was enchanting. I doubt if the farmers knew how cool it was to watch them harvest their apples and grapes.

I doubt if the village residents heard music when the hooves rang out on the ancient cobblestone streets. Do they dream of Don Quixote tilting at windmills when they stroll down their country roads. I did.

We help our clients recognize the resources they have. What resources does your community have? What is its essential story? How would you describe it to someone visiting from Spain or just a state away? Maybe like Don Quixote you could take a more romantic view of your surroundings. Go ahead have some delusions of grandeur. It might be how a visitor would see it.
