The TSI team extends an exuberant CONGRATULATIONS to Kenosha
Public Museum on their brand-new permanent exhibit, “From Curiosity to Science”.
Betty attended the grand opening last weekend and was thrilled to see how it
all came together. Kudos to everyone involved—this one is sure to delight
visitors of all ages for years to come!
Designed and fabricated by TSI in collaboration with museum
staff, this immersive, object-driven experience takes visitors on a journey
through centuries and all around the globe.
It begins with an immersive recreation of a 1600s “Cabinet of Curiosities”. Visitors pass through a long, elegant corridor, surrounded on either side by eclectic oddities and taxidermy from the KPM’s extensive collection, many of which can be periodically swapped out to refresh the experience for repeat visitors and school groups.
Contour-cut interpretive graphics adorned with period
moulding discuss early private collections of objects from the natural world,
and how they became more systematic and organized over time, giving rise to the
first museums.
Where the Cabinet experience concludes, a captivating projected video by introduces visitors to the scientific process and the important work of natural sciences today.
Throughout the rest of the gallery, visitors explore hundreds more natural objects, taxidermy, and human artifacts in color-coded cases that denote the ecosystems of their origin, including water, wetland, grassland, forest, arid, and polar.
Modular cube-style platforms house large taxidermy pieces against photo-realistic backdrops of their habitats. Glass barriers ensure the pieces stay protected while still offering full visibility for visitors.
Through graphics and audiovisual interactives along the way, visitors meet various scientists working in each ecosystem and learn about the importance and implications of ongoing scientific research. Peppered throughout the exhibition are mechanical interactives such as magnifiers, sliders, a scent station, and flip book, providing opportunities for hands-on learning.
