Nine Body Language Gestures You Can Use to Improve an Impression

With the election at full height, I have noticed a lot of talk on the body language used in debates. What does that laugh, sigh or eye roll say to us about the person? I also read that a president that looks confident is more likely to be elected. At TSI, body language is a part of the interview process. We often talk about eye contact or the handshake. We like people that smile at everyone. We believe in hiring for attitude as you can train a skill. “Research shows that it takes four minutes to make a first impression, and, according to a widely cited study by UCLA professor Albert Mehrabian, body language accounts for 55% of that impression (38% comes from tone of voice; the remaining 7% from our actual words).” – Forbes 2009 ()
This is a that says how body language influences others and how you feel about yourself. It suggests faking it until you make it. I believe the plain act of smiling can make you feel happier at that moment. This presenter actually appeared a little cold to me until she almost cried. Those tears of vulnerability helped me like her even more. Vulnerability can build relationships and can be seen in body language.
If you are an onsite interpreter at a historic site, museum, nature center, park, etc. wouldn’t it be great if a few simple changes to your body language improved how the visitors were inspired by your story, or if you were giving a presentation and came across as more engaging and therefore memorable? Or you won the sale because you are seen as friendly and sincere. Or you improved the relationship with a loved one because you knew how to make it safe via your gestures. Or you got the second date with a great guy!
