Six Reasons Marketing is Sooooo Important

When I was in business school back in the late 80s there were no small business classes. I knew I wanted to own my own business some day and needed to learn more about that. I became aware of the SBA and SBDC via some consulting my marketing research class did for local small businesses. I started hanging out at the SBA offices. I got to know the people. I was hoping for a job there while I was in school. While there, I started taking SBA classes at night, too. It was odd sitting in an off campus classroom setting with a bunch of adults learning things about business that the university wasn’t teaching me.

Finally, by the time I was in graduate school with a graduate assistantship, I got to work through the SBDC advising inventors. Another strange twist: giving advice when I was looking for it myself. At that time, I finally knew a little bit about marketing. Inventors tend to know more about their inventions than how to sell them.

Today, I am now the chair of the advisory board for our . This is a fairly new committee, so we are just starting to help. I am grateful that I once again will be assisting and promoting entrepreneurship. And my first push with this committee is once again marketing.

I think a lot of start-ups do not understand the importance of marketing. If no one knows what you offer and who you are, you are not going to have a business. This also can apply to any entity and your personal brand. Here are some reasons marketing it is so important:

1. There is no business without clients.

All of this may seem obvious. However, many do not put in the time it takes to complete marketing efforts. At Taylor Studios Inc. it has always been a priority. We believe everyone works in marketing. You have to set aside the resources necessary to get the word out.

If your organization needs help with marketing, call your local SBDC office. They can help, if that is not your expertise. You can also establish a personal brand that will help you in your career. I suggest you Google how to do that. My favorite expert in the marketing field today is Seth Godin. !
