Fulton Mansion
State Historic Site
Rockport, TX
Fulton Mansion was built in the 1870s by entrepreneur George Fulton and his wife, Harriet Smith-Fulton. Located 35 miles north of Corpus Christi, this mansion is noted for its architectural style, unique construction methods, and advanced mechanical systems – which featured gas lighting, central heating, and indoor plumbing. Taylor Studios designed, built, and installed exhibits about this historic home and the Fulton family who lived in it for 18 years in the adjacent Visitor Center.

Exhibits were devised under the central theme, “The Fulton family exemplifies the drive for domestic and economic success in an era of Western expansion.” Large scalloped frames and warm colors add a Victorian feel, mimicking the interior of the Fulton home.

A gear interactive gives a fun way for visitors to learn about George Fulton’s many talents – including those of inventor and bridge builder. A custom illustrated 2D cutout of George Fulton holding a wrench adds to the overall message of the American dream. A scale model of the Roebling bridge, which George helped design, offers the chance for children to practice their own bridge-building skills.

Props and clothing from Mr. Fulton’s many careers, as well as clothing from Harriet’s social outings, encourage children to learn about the complexities of Victorian life as they play.

In the Reflection area, visitors are asked to think about their time at the mansion, and about their own family’s story. Visitors are drawn to a large scalloped graphic with imbedded digital picture frames displaying photos from the mansion and recent events. Below the graphic, a touchscreen interactive invites visitors to make their own cattle brand, take a period photo with their face inside, or leave their thoughts. Visitors can then print their keepsakes at the front desk.

One challenge in this project was the difference in design between buildings. The Visitor Center is a brand-new, modern building, but the client desired a look and feel to complement the 1870s Fulton home. Taylor Studios married the two architectural styles by infusing the space with warm colors and period details, while not going overboard as to look out of place in the modern building.
