What’s Your Central Theme?

We help our clients craft central themes. A good central theme summarizes the significance of the content clearly in one sentence. It is relevant, provocative and meaningful. It gives the reader a reason to care. It builds a personal connection to the purpose of the exhibit. Have you ever thought about crafting a central theme for your year?
I recently read an HBR Blog that struck a cord. It suggested crafting a person theme. Over the last few months, I haven’t been able to stay focused on one thing for any length of time. I often feel scattered. The HBR Blog talked about that, too. I don’t know if this is a problem or not, yet I thought if I had a central focus that I was always moving towards I would feel more purposeful.
Over the last three years, I have made a push to network more and widen my circle of friends. I have also been searching for my last date. With this in mind, I decided my central theme is “to build relationships.” It is also the tag line for Taylor Studios Inc. This central theme works in both my personal and business life. I have a Viktor Frankel visual on my desk that I often peek at. It reminds me that relationships and love are part of fulfillment and success.
How will a central theme change behavior and help with focus? I believe, when you are confronted with two options, this simple theme will remind you of what is important. As an example, last night friends invited me over for snacks and conversation. I had many other things on my to do list, yet I choose time with friends instead. I will carve out time to connect with people. I got an email last week thanking me for being involved in a community luncheon. He said someone told him that the world is run by the people that show up. I will show up in order to connect with people. I will work to connect more with my staff and clients too. Even though I often want to give up, I will also continue my search for true love. That seems to be one goal that has eluded me, unless my love of horses counts. 🙂
What is the one thing you could really focus on that would impact your life the most? What’s the theme that could guide your life for the next year?
